Last updated: October 11, 2026 · Flit – Instant Translation
The short version Flit stores translation history locally and does not operate a translation server, require an account, or integrate advertising or analytics SDKs. Default on-device translation works offline after language packs are installed. Optional high-fidelity mode uses downloaded Apple Intelligence models; see below.
Clipboard
Flit reads your clipboard when you open the translation panel or when the "Pin" mode is active and you copy something new. OCR runs locally. In default on-device mode, translation content is processed on your Mac. Optional high-fidelity mode uses downloaded Apple Intelligence models when available. Flit does not protect the system clipboard from access by other apps.
Translation history
Flit stores your past translations in a local database on your Mac (using Apple's SwiftData framework). The database is stored in the app's local Application Support directory inside its sandbox container. Flit does not upload or sync history. Records remain until you delete them in History or choose Clear History. Removing the app alone may leave local data behind; system backups can also retain copies.
Language preferences
Your preferred source and target languages are saved in macOS's standard user preferences (UserDefaults), stored locally on your Mac. This is standard macOS behavior, equivalent to an app remembering its window size.
By default, Flit uses Apple's on-device translation engine. Once the required language packs are downloaded, translation content is processed on your Mac and this mode works offline. Downloading language packs requires a network connection. Apple states that all TranslationSession translations are processed on the user's device. Apple may collect API usage and performance metrics, including the app bundle identifier and source and target languages, but not original or translated content.
If you enable Apple Intelligence mode on an eligible Mac, Flit requests Apple's high-fidelity strategy. It uses Apple Intelligence models when available and otherwise falls back to on-device translation. Availability depends on hardware, system configuration, language, and region. The strategy uses downloaded Apple Intelligence models; when these are available it does not require Translation language packs. Apple framework behavior is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. Flit does not operate a translation server. You can disable this mode at any time from the menu bar icon.
Flit uses Apple's Translation, Vision, and SwiftData frameworks, and the open-source KeyboardShortcuts package for keyboard shortcuts. It does not integrate advertising or analytics SDKs. See Apple's TranslationSession documentation for framework metrics. If you contact support by email, we receive the information you choose to send and use it to respond to your request. Avoid sending sensitive clipboard content.
Flit does not require an account or integrate advertising or tracking SDKs for children or adults. The local processing, Apple system services, and voluntary support contact practices above apply to all users.
If Flit ever adds a feature that involves data collection, this policy will be updated before that feature ships, and the updated date at the top of this page will change. We will not retroactively change how existing data is handled.
